Irvine Barclay Theatre 2026-27 Season: Plan a Night From Turtle Rock

October 15, 2026

If the show starts at 8, where do you eat, and where do you leave the car?

That is the planning question behind every evening at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. A row of restaurants sits across the street from the stage, and the parking lot right in front of them is the one the theatre asks its audience to stay out of. On the Barclay's directions page, the theatre puts it plainly:

"We do not recommend parking in the shopping center across from the theater, as spaces are limited, and non-customer vehicles are subject to towing."

So you park once, in the structure beside the theatre, and walk across Campus Drive for dinner. When you eat depends on the curtain time, and the 2026-27 season groups into evening shows, early Sunday shows and weekend matinees.

The stage on the campus edge

The Irvine Barclay Theatre is at 4242 Campus Drive, on the edge of the UC Irvine campus. Its homepage calls it a 750-seat "jewel box." At that size, a ballet company or a solo musician plays to a room where even the back rows feel close to the stage.

The building took a long time to happen. According to the theatre's Mission & History page, community advocates began pushing for a performing arts venue in the 1970s. The nonprofit operating company was chartered in 1986, and the theatre opened to the public on September 30, 1990. It was built as a partnership between the City of Irvine, UCI and private donors. The stated mission includes serving community cultural groups and university programs alongside visiting artists. That mix explains why this season's calendar runs from a celebrity chef to a children's musical to a holiday Nutcracker that fills most of December.

Where the car goes

The Barclay says the closest parking structure sits at the corner of Campus Drive and west Peltason, right next to the theatre. UCI Arts lists it as the Student Center Parking Structure and names it as the structure for Irvine Barclay Theatre patrons. UCI runs the structure, not the theatre. If you tell the kiosk attendant you're there for the Barclay, the discounted performance rate is $10, paid by cash or major credit card.

You can also pay ahead. The Barclay links to UCI Parking's ParkByPlate system, where you pick the Irvine Barclay Theatre as your event, confirm the date and pay. After that, your license plate works as the permit. The $10 figure is the theatre's event rate. UCI's general visitor permit page lists different rates for other visits.

So every evening below starts the same way. Park beside the theatre, then walk across Campus Drive to University Center, which runs from 4100 to 4255 Campus Drive.

Evening, early Sunday or matinee

The 2026-27 season listing on thebarclay.org has shows starting at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8 p.m. Most of the fall and winter dates fall into three groups, and each group fits a different meal.

Curtain Fall and winter shows on the listing How dinner fits
7 and 8 p.m. evenings Yotam Ottolenghi, Wed. Oct. 14; Shanghai Ballet's The Butterfly Lovers, Fri. Oct. 16; Begum Parween Sultana, Fri. Oct. 23; Swingin' Through the Holidays with the Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra, Wed. Dec. 9; Robert Cazimero's Christmas in Hawai'i, Fri. Dec. 18; DakhaBrakha, Fri. Jan. 15; The Peking Acrobats, Sat. Jan. 16 at 8 p.m.; Twin Peaks: A Conversation with the Stars, Sun. Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.; Jesse Cook, Wed. Jan. 27 Sit-down dinner first, then walk over
5 p.m. Sundays CelloGayageum, Oct. 25; Choir! Choir! Choir!: Un-Silent Night, Nov. 29; Trio Barclay, Jan. 24 Coffee or a snack before, dinner after
Weekend matinees Cat Kid Comic Club: The Musical, Sat. Oct. 24 at 1 and 5 p.m.; National Theatre Live Hamlet, Sun. Nov. 1 at 3 p.m.; The Peking Acrobats, Sat. Jan. 16 at 1 p.m.; The Adventures of Tortoise and Hare: The Next Gen, Sat. Feb. 6 at 1 and 5 p.m. Lunch beforehand or dessert after

Wednesday nights stand out on this list. Ottolenghi, the holiday jazz show and Jesse Cook all start at 8 on a Wednesday. A night at the theatre fits around a workday without much rearranging.

The evening show

This is where the walk across Campus Drive matters most. You park in the structure, cross the street, eat, and walk back with the car already where it needs to be. Sit-down options on Irvine Company Retail's University Center directory include Eureka!, Tenori, Le Diplomate Cafe, Mad Dumplings and Northern Cafe.

Fast Hotpot is also on the list. The Irvine Standard covered it in May 2025 as a new hot pot spot at University Center. Hot pot takes its time, so it suits a night when you sit down early enough to keep an eye on the clock.

The Ottolenghi evening on October 14 is billed as "Simple Too: An Evening with Yotam Ottolenghi," hosted by Evan Kleiman. It's the one night this fall when dinner beforehand works as a warm-up for the program itself.

The Sunday 5 p.m. show

An early Sunday curtain flips the order. A 5 p.m. start means a late-afternoon coffee from Peet's Coffee before the show and a full meal after it. Faster options on the directory include Mendocino Farms, Tender Greens and Luna Grill. Sweetgreen is a newer choice. The Irvine Standard reported in June that it had opened at University Center as the chain's second Irvine location, with a dedicated pickup drive-thru. The drive-thru suits a meal at home after an early show.

The November 29 Choir! Choir! Choir! date is a holiday sing-along called Un-Silent Night. It falls on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, which makes it a ready-made plan for a house still full of visiting family.

The weekend matinee

The family shows run twice in one day. Cat Kid Comic Club: The Musical plays October 24 at 1 and 5 p.m., and The Adventures of Tortoise and Hare: The Next Gen follows the same pattern on February 6. With kids, the after-show stop is usually dessert. OWLY Dessert Shoppe appeared in the Irvine Standard's October 1 dessert roundup for its crepes and bubble tea at University Center. Insomnia Cookies and Cha for Tea are on the center's directory too.

For a 1 p.m. curtain, the pre-show meal is lunch. Breakfast Republic, Blue Bowl Superfoods, California Gogi Grill and Blaze Fast-Fire'd Pizza are among the names on the directory, alongside the In-N-Out Burger and Chick-fil-A many families already know.

The evening, in order

The sequence below keeps every option above within walking distance of the car:

  1. Prepay through ParkByPlate if you'd like the kiosk handled before you arrive, or tell the attendant at the structure that you're a Barclay patron to get the $10 rate.
  2. Park at Campus and west Peltason, in the Student Center Parking Structure UCI Arts lists for the Barclay.
  3. Walk across Campus Drive to University Center for your before-show meal, and leave the car where it is.
  4. Walk back to 4242 Campus Drive for the curtain.
  5. For a Sunday 5 p.m. show or a matinee, eat after the show instead, and leave the car in the structure while you're at dinner or dessert.

The Barclay's warning about the University Center lot covers non-customer vehicles, so the car stays in the structure for the whole visit.

The December weekend to plan around

Saturday, December 5 is the busiest date on the local calendar this season. Festival Ballet Theatre's The Nutcracker opens its run at the Barclay that weekend and plays through December 24. The same afternoon, the City of Irvine holds Illuminate Irvine at Great Park from 3 to 7 p.m., with live performances, shopping and the lighting of the holiday tree and Palm Court Arts Complex. The Holidayz at the Park light display starts that night and runs daily from dusk to 9 p.m. Because the Nutcracker runs for nearly three weeks, there are plenty of chances to see both on different nights.

The Barclay's season listing is live and can change, so check dates and seats on the theatre's site before you book. Restaurant hours aren't listed on the center's directory, so call ahead for a late dinner after an 8 p.m. show.

At JoJo Romeo & Associates, we believe a home's story includes its evenings, like the Wednesday show and the dinner across the street. When we prepare a Turtle Rock home for market, we write that story into the presentation along with the square footage. Ask us for a complimentary home valuation and transformation plan, and we'll show you how your home's daily life fits into the way we market it.
